Increased Police Patrols Ramp Up the Hunt for DUI Suspects

The Imperative of Enhanced DUI Patrols During the Holiday Season

Stepping up DUI Enforcement

In light of the upcoming holiday festivities, the Tracy Police Department has heightened its commitment to preserving safety on our roads. The department has, since Sunday and expected to continue until Tuesday, December 10, increased the presence of patrol officers on our streets. These extra patrols are specifically on the lookout for drivers operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Funding for Enhanced Road Safety

The amplified DUI enforcement effort is subsidized by a generous grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. This funding, originating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has provided our department the means to work towards a safer holiday season for every member of our community.

Staying Safe During Holiday Merriments

The department hopes that all individuals planning to partake in celebrations will consider the safety of their community and make wise decisions. Appointing a sober driver or arranging alternate modes of transport can help ensure that festive cheer does not result in tragic consequences.

The Impact of DUI on Fatal Traffic Crashes

Despite the best efforts of law enforcement agencies nationwide, drunk driving continues to play a significant role in fatal traffic accidents, especially during the holiday season. The somber statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal that from 2018 to 2022, December alone saw nearing 4,759 lives lost to alcohol-impaired crashes.

DUI Fatalities in California

The sobering reality extends to our home state as well. In 2022, a total of 1,479 Californians were killed in alcohol-impaired crashes. These tragic numbers underscore the gravity of the issue and stress the importance of increased DUI enforcement.

Impaired Driving: Beyond Alcohol

While the public narrative often centers around alcohol-impaired driving, it is important to acknowledge that impairment behind the wheel is not exclusive to alcohol consumption. Prescription drugs, medications sold over-the-counter, cannabis products, and other substances may also cause impairment. It is paramount that anyone consuming such products or alcohol should make the responsible choice and refrain from driving.

If You See Something, Do Something

If a driver appears to be impaired, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1. Keeping our roads safe is a community effort, and every responsible action contributes to the overall safety of our city. Remember, your call could save a life.
